About Black Girl Magic Canada
Black Girl Magic Canada serves Black English-speaking women and youth in Greater Montreal through arts, culture, education, and socio-economic development. Its employment-related work includes career exploration, leadership and mentorship programs, employment-readiness activities, and digital arts training.
Community Context
Black English-speaking women in Montreal often have to meet French-language expectations while also dealing with racial and gender biases. In addition, English-language employment services may not be equipped to account for the effects of racism in hiring and promotion, while Black community programs operate mainly in French.
Current COF-Supported Project
The Black Women Emploi Her Project features pre-employment services for Black English-speaking women in Greater Montreal.
The project features:
- CV and interview workshops tailored to the Quebec labour market
- Employment assessments, return-to-work plans, and ongoing case management
- Mentorship with established Black women professionals
- Networking events with recruiters, business owners, and inclusive employers
Participants pursuing freelance or entrepreneurial work also receive referrals to specialized business programs. The project empowers Black English-speaking women to pursue meaningful employment through tailored supports, mentorship, and professional networks.
