About Inicio
Inicio supports first- and second-language English speakers in Montreal in developing the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the current labour market. Its free, full-time employability program combines hard and soft skill development, motivation-building, and guidance toward meaningful employment.
Community Context
Many English-speaking immigrants, particularly those holding open work permits, are ineligible for public employment assistance programs and must navigate the system on their own.
A significant portion are racialized individuals living near or below the poverty line.
According to PERT, English-speaking immigrants experience an unemployment rate of 11.6%, while racialized English speakers experience an unemployment rate of 12.3%, reflecting heightened economic marginalization despite strong motivation and qualifications.
COF-Supported Project
With the COF-supported project Momentum, Inicio provides personalized, onsite employment support through career counselling and direct employer engagement.
Each participant begins with a comprehensive assessment, leading to a tailored employment plan that can include:
- Job-readiness workshops
- Resume and interview coaching
- Digital literacy training
- Mentorship
- Targeted referrals to training or upskilling programs
Meanwhile, the organization will also map wraparound, training, education, and employability supports for clients, creating a visual roadmap for them to combine resources as they search for lasting work opportunities.
