About Native Friendship Centre of Montreal
An Indigenous-led organization, the Native Friendship Centre of Montreal serves First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Its frontline services include help with résumés, applications, interviews, workplace communication, and job follow-up. NFCM also supports education and upgrading onsite through the First Nations Regional Adult Education Centre and supervises community service placements.
Community Context
Many NFCM clients seek work while dealing with unstable housing, missing identification, justice involvement, interrupted education, or gaps in employment. Most communicate primarily in English, sometimes alongside an Indigenous language, which limits their ability to engage with employment and public services. Their caseworkers often have to contend with clients’ urgent housing, documentation, health, and crisis concerns, limiting the time available for sustained employment counselling and employer outreach.
COF-Supported Project
The Indigenous Employment Support Project offers a dedicated, culturally safe English-language employment service for Indigenous community members in Montreal.
The project features:
- Individual employment counselling and action plans
- Résumé, application, interview, and job-search assistance
- Job-retention follow-up, employer connections, and referrals to training
- An Indigenous employment and career fair for job seekers, employers, unions, educators, and community organizations
